The exhibition will showcase the depth of talent of the artists. It will also show the variety of objects, events and landscapes that capture the imagination of artists. On display will be local subjects such as lighthouses, piers, boats, moonahs and the beach; as well as a range of other subjects that have inspired creativity.

The works selected include oil and acrylic paintings, water colours and mixed media. The prints on show include etchings, lithographs and digital works.

The Awards are being judged by Geoffrey Edwards, Director of Geelong Art Gallery; Susan McCulloch, writer, publisher and curator; and Anne Virgo, Director of the Australia Print Workshop in Melbourne.

The judges will meet just prior to the exhibition opening to make a final decision on the winners of the Open Art Acquisition and Print Making Awards.

Cr Helene Cameron, Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor, is looking forward to the interactive component of the exhibition.

“I’m really excited about the exhibition and to be able to have a say in who should receive the People’s Choice Award.

“I can’t wait to see all the pieces and to meet the fabulous artists behind them.

“I encourage everyone to get along to the exhibition and vote in the People’s Choice Award,” she says.

The winner People’s Choice Award will not be announced until the end of the exhibition. This award category will be judged on votes received by visitors to the exhibition.

According to Leanne Stein, Arts Officer at the Borough of Queenscliffe, the judges had a challenging tasks choosing from the submissions.

“The quality of the works submitted was very high and many fine works did not make the shortlist.

“Only 50 pieces have been selected for the exhibition and the Award winners will be chosen from these,” she says.

There are three Awards categories and $6,000 in prize money on offer. The winner announcements will be:

  • Open Art Acquisitive Award $5,000 – Saturday 4 May, 2pm, Salt Contemporary Art
  • Print Making Award $500 – Saturday 4 May, 2pm, Salt Contemporary Art
  • People’s Choice Award $500 – Sunday 19 May, 2.30pm, Seaview Gallery

The public is also invited to ‘Meet the Artists’ at 2.30pm on Saturday 11 May at Tussock Upstairs.

The 150th Anniversary Art Awards and Exhibition is just one of the commemorative activities that will take place in 2013 as the Borough of Queenscliffe celebrates its 150 year anniversary.
